Can plastic roads help save the planet?
Engineer Toby McCartney explains how his Scottish start-up MacRebur is persuading councils to use local waste plastic to build roads. Two English councils have already started building roads this way.

Green Reef :
- we must recycle plastic to clean up the planet and preserve the oceans (Read more about plastic pollution)
- we must save the sand (Read more about the sand problem)
- we must prevent the disappearance of fish in the oceans
- we must rebuild nurseries for fish and coral reef to repopulate the oceans
- we must reduce the erosion of shoreline and beaches
Taking into consideration all these important points, we propose an innovative idea to recycle plastic !
Turn Plastic Pollution into Marine Protection
The amount of plastic to be recycled is huge. It is essential to devise multiple ways to recycle it without polluting the planet and the oceans.
Discover our innovative recycling idea by watching this short video:
As you saw on this little video, by introducing plastic flakes in concrete for non-structural constructions, we make a big step in the right direction!
With this special concrete we want to launch the production of “green” artificial reefs : Green Reef©
>> To read the scientific report “Green Concrete using Plastic Waste”
We did not invent the artificial reef, our idea is to replace a part of the sand used to make those concrete artificial reefs, by recycling plastic flakes. That’s why we call it “Green Reef©“
- About concrete artificial reefs :
L.E. Harris, Consulting Coastal and Oceanographic Engineer and Associate Professor of Ocean Engineering Dept. of Marine and Environmental Systems Florida Institute of Technology says :
” Artificial reefs have been successfully used to construct submerged breakwaters for shoreline stabilization. These systems mimic natural reefs in reducing the wave energy that reaches the shore. Special design considerations are necessary to ensure that artificial reefs will be stable, durable, and provide the intended purposes. Anchoring of reef units may be necessary in shallow water or due to forces by large waves or strong currents. In addition to the coastal erosion protection, environmental, aquaculture, and recreational amenities can be provided by these systems. This includes environmental mitigation and enhancement, increased habitat for marine life, benthic and pelagic aquaculture applications, and recreational benefits including swimming, snorkeling, diving, fishing and surfing “.
We will study the possibility of using Green Reef© as anchorage, as you can see on the picture below.
Other uses of our special concrete
We can also recycle tons of plastic and save tons of sand by incorporating plastic flakes to manufacture thousands of Tetrapods.
Tetrapods are used all over the world to protect the coastline and build piers.
