8 Million Tons of plastic is dumped at sea each year. Becoming 5 massive gyres that pollute the oceans for decades !
We’re treating the oceans like a trash bin. Around 80 percent of marine litter originates on land, and most of that is plastic. In 2010, 8 Million Tons of plastic trash ended up in the ocean from coastal countries: far more than the total that has been measured floating on the surface in the Ocean’s. Plastic that pollutes our oceans and waterways has severe impacts on our environment and our economy. Seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating marine plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation.
There are 5.25 Trillion pieces of plastic trash in the world’s oceans, and each year, 8 Million Tons of plastic are added to the count. That’s equivalent to one municipal garbage truck pulling up to the beach and dumping its contents every minute !
Because of the difficulties in working out the exact amount (much of it may have sunk), the scientists said the true figure could be as much as 12.7 Million Tons polluting the oceans each year. The figure is expected to rise each year. Between 2010 and 2025, some 155 Million Tons of plastic could be dumped into the ocean, enough to fill 100 bags per foot of coastline.
Dr. Jambeck – Associate Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Georgia – said: “a global action is needed to tackle the problem ! “
Ellen MacArthur Foundation – Davos 2016 :
“Decades of plastic production have already caused environmental problems. The report says that every year “at least 8 Million Tons of plastics leak into the ocean – which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. If no action is taken, this is expected to increase to two per minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050. In a business-as-usual scenario, the ocean is expected to contain one Ton of plastic for every three Tons of fish by 2025, and by 2050, more plastics than fish (by weight).”
